Student Member Scholarships

Writers of Kern is pleased to offer one or more student membership scholarships. The scholarship(s) will be awarded to student(s) for one year’s membership in WOK and California Writers Club.  Details of the scholarship(s) and requirements are as follows:

Application deadline: June 1, 2026, midnight, online word or PDF submission

Subject-Line: Scholarship Application

  1. Requirements:
    1. Students must be enrolled in a Kern County University, Community College, High School, or Junior High/Middle School. There is no age restriction and students, including adults, of all ages are encouraged to apply.
    1. Students must provide proof of residency in Kern County
    1. Statement of need is NOT required
  • Scholarships include:
    • Writers of Kern and California Writers Club student membership
    • Eligibility to submit to WOK and CWC writing contests and publications (submission fee may be required)
    • Social Media and local news release with student bio (approved by parent/guardian if under 18)
  • Applications must include:
    • Student letter of interest
    • Instructor/Teacher recommendation
      • Including length of acquaintance
      • Writing and personal qualities that warrant scholarship
      • Unique student needs, if any
    • Portfolio of four diverse works, including one each of
      • poetry
      • non-fiction/memoir,
      • fiction
      • student choice
    • Parental statement of consent to apply (if under 18 years of age)
