Our Commitment

Writers of Kern is committed to making this website accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. As a nonprofit organization serving writers in our community, we want all members and visitors — regardless of ability or the technology they use to browse the web — to be able to fully participate in what we offer.

Conformance Status

We are pleased to report that this website substantially conforms to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, averaging 9.9 on WAVE (no critical errors) and 100 on Google Lighthouse across the site. We have also manually verified keyboard navigation and focus visibility throughout the site. Because accessibility depends on more than automated testing alone, we continue to review the site on an ongoing basis.

Measures We’ve Taken

This site is built on WordPress using the Genesis Framework. Steps we’ve taken include:

  • “Skip to navigation” and “Skip to main content” links, with the skip link as the first focusable element on the page, verified with keyboard-only navigation
  • High-visibility custom focus outlines on all interactive elements — including links, buttons, and our cookie consent tools — so keyboard users can always see exactly where they are on the page
  • Text and background colors checked and corrected to meet the 4.5:1 contrast ratio required by WCAG AA
  • Descriptive alternative text on meaningful images
  • A responsive layout that adapts to phones, tablets, and different browser zoom levels
  • A logical heading structure to support screen reader navigation

Known Limitations

None known at this time. As with any website, we rely in part on third-party plugins and embedded content, including our cookie consent tool. While we’ve tested and configured these to work well with keyboard and screen reader navigation, we don’t have full control over future updates made to that code by the vendor.
