Unbalanced Awareness

April 4, 2017 By Guest

Won’t you shake me free of these moldings
Vibrate me into feeling
Something more
Than beaten down and torn
Let the moon pull loose
These entwined roots of regret
As darkness gives way to dawn
Let the wind carry me on

—Terry McGhee

Terry McGhee

Terry McGhee was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. He began pecking at an old typewriter in 1992 at the age of thirteen and quickly found that words had a way of releasing emotions that otherwise would never have seen the light of day. Currently working with Bakersfield’s own indie film company Hectic Films Productions, he now splits his time between movies, madness, prose, and poetry.

The Knothole

April 3, 2017 By Joan Raymond

A worn, wooden fence
Stands firm. A boundary between
Myself and life unnoticed
Before today. I wonder –

What lies beyond, concealed,
Behind the steadfast obstruction?
Perhaps an acquaintance or friendly face –
Maybe a kindred soul.

I search the peeled planks for
Ways to peer past my
Gnarled barrier, and to my surprise I spy
A tiny, insignificant knothole.

Has it been there all along?
Secreted from sight – a reality –
A continuation of activity
Hidden long ago from view.

My pulse quickens as I peer through
Discovering a tinge of color –
Not from a face but a garden,
Paused and prepared to rest.

There stand faded flowers held fast
To spent stalks and stems. They wait –
For summer’s end, and
Fall’s signal to slumber.

I turn from the emotionless barricade,
My curiosity satisfied. My heart
In harmony from a new
Perspective of life within my view.

Because I Am a Poet

April 2, 2017 By Guest

I realize it’s quite late – most people are in bed.
The quiet time is best for me to write what’s in my head
(what’s truly in my heart).

So during the night I start.
I want to put it all down
on paper, black on white.
It’s crucial that I find the right
adjective for each noun,
the accurate definition,
the proper words that rhyme.
If I could quit my full-time job,
I’d write poetry all the time.

I began to write as a youngster – it was cosmic destiny!
My Mom named me after the British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
All to God I owe it
because I am a poet.
Mom asked me if I know it;
she said that my feet show it –
they’re long fellows!

(The crowd bellows.)
But I don’t really care,
I will write anyway.
For my own aspiration
I write ‘most every day.

(So there!)
I don’t need congratulations
to affirm my imaginations.
Life’s full of inspirations
for poetic revelations –
they’re everywhere!

—Shelley Evans

On the Road Home

April 1, 2017 By Guest

A thin wisp of disturbed dust follows
a pickup climbing slowly up a mountain.
The driver heads north along a sandy side road,
bordering Barstow, California.

There is no clear destination, no place we see
that he can call home that we can visualize

We have just come from family and friends
in Las Vegas.  Visitors’ remorse haunts
We still hear familiar voices, laughter,
feel the tight hugs imploring us to stay.

If only the truck could reverse itself
and not disturb the pure brown earth,
could come back down the hill
and put back all of the tiny origins of life

which floated away, changed, left their
sanctity and took up new space.
If only we could go back to the place
home once was and begin again.

Tips for Crafting a Successful Scholarship Application

March 16, 2017 By Annis Cassells

Rebecca Langston-George

The Peg Connelly Scholarship was established by Writers of Kern to both honor the late children’s writer Peg Connelly and encourage all childrens writers in Kern County to achieve their goals. Up to two $500 scholarships are awarded annually.

Applications will be accepted March 11-31, 2017.  To apply, writers must submit an application along with either the full text of a picture book OR the first ten pages of a young adult or middle grade manuscript.

Full details can be found here.

What can the money be used for?

Writing conferences, retreats, and classes as well as travel expenses for research are all appropriate ways to use the scholarship money.  Applicants could also use the money for tools such as a computer or books on writing craft.  If finding time to write is a problem, the money could even be spent on childcare.  Basically, anything the applicant feels would help him or her achieve personal writing goals is an acceptable use of the money.  If you need ideas on where to attend workshops, classes or conferences focused on writing and/or writing for children, here are a few options:

  • SCBWI International Conference in Los Angeles
  • SCBWI CenCal Writers’ Day
  • Central Coast Writers Program
  • Santa Barbara Writers Program
  • Highlights Founders’ Workshops
  • UCLA Writers’ Extension Classes online

What does a successful application look like?

Applicants who express specific goals along with a brief itemized budget show they have given the task careful thought and have an actual plan they want to accomplish. These type of applications are much more likely to be awarded money.

  • Specific:  My goal is to work on infusing my middle grade novel “Joey’s War” with a unique voice, so I plan to attend the Highlights workshop titled “Characters with Voice” August 21-24 in Honesdale, PA.  The workshop costs $425 which includes lodging and food.  A flight from LAX costs $200 for a total cost of $625.  I can cover the additional $125 if I’m awarded the $500 scholarship.
  • Non-Specific:  I plan to go to a writing workshop.

In addition, applicants who demonstrate a knowledge of craft in the way they format their materials stand out as professionals. Manuscripts should follow the industry standard: double-spaced, in a 12 point serif font, with one inch margins and the first line beginning one-third of the way down the first page.  The age category (picture book, chapter book, middle grade, young adult) should be placed in the upper right corner with the word count below it.  Entries should carefully adhere to all guidelines, be free from spelling errors, be written in an active voice and demonstrate the writer is a professional with a lively interest in writing as well as growing as a writer.

This is a great opportunity for local children’s writers.  With a little thought and planning you could be this year’s recipient, and further your writing dreams.
