The Young Writers of Kern (YWOK) Essay Competition is open to Kern County students in grades sixth through twelve as well as specified community college students. The writing project is aligned with curriculum currently in use. The competition emphasizes argumentative writing. This year’s topic is, “What does it mean to be a socially responsible member of American society?” The purpose of the competition is to promote critical thinking, writing, and research skills.
