Writers of Kern members meet monthly, January – May and July – November. WOK monthly meetings feature professionals who share their knowledge, expertise, and experiences in their field of writing or publishing. Past speakers have included published authors, editors, agents, photojournalists, poets, marketing specialists, teachers, and motivational speakers.
Monthly meetings are held the 3rd Saturday of the month, 8:45 a.m. – 11:30 noon. January-March and June-November. Meetings are held at Hodel’s Country Dining, 5917 Knudsen Dr., Bakersfield, CA 93308. Meeting fees: $10 for members; $15 for guests. Meeting fee includes Hodel’s full buffet breakfast. First time visitors are always welcome.
To further its education goals, WOK holds an annual conference in the spring featuring in-depth workshops of special interest to members and the community.
Members Only Meetings
Annual members only meetings are held in May (WOK Honors Dinner) and December (Winter Dinner).
Critique groups are facilitated by published authors. Members come together to share their work and get helpful comments from fellow group members. The format is designed to enable each writer to do the best job of writing in his or her style and genre. Positive analysis and helpful hints are encouraged. Periodically WOK holds workshops designed to appeal to published and non-published writers who want to hone their skills and network with other writers.
Publishers, book store owners, published writers, and individuals with expertise in a number of subjects have all made themselves available at these beneficial workshops.
